Timeless gowns offer enduring glamour

This is the season of the classic bride, and the prettiest gowns are those that will look just as spectacular 20 years from now. The fashion world has been turned on its ear with over-the-top runway creations, but from our vantage point, bridal style is classic, classic, classic.

Although the media loved to poke fun at the Disney collection by kirstie kelly at this spring’s new York Bridal Fashion Week, the princess gowns were quite subtle compared to the designs from haya al houti, (who undoubtedly drew inspiration from Disney’s Little Mermaid with an octopus ursula gown) orthe inclusion of the Pope’s headpiece in Lourdes Libman’s designs. At least the designers are honest in telling us that couture isn’t for everyone.

Our favorite designs this year, available in boutiques throughout Arizona (no magic wand required), have a focus on clean lines, lovely silhouettes and fabrics that offer a slight shimmer offset by unique adornments or accessories.

Off the shoulder and strapless are still favorites for our climate, as are light fabrics such as peau de soie, silk and chiffon. Grecian draping offers that ethereal floating-on-air illusion. Beading and pearl accents take a sophisticated turn when confined to the bodice or a sleek band around the bride’s waist. These are the gowns that a bride will always cherish, and choices abound to suit every woman’s taste.

Selecting the ideal gown begins not on the runway, but in your favorite boutique. Armed with knowledge and taste, the boutique staff really is your best friend when searching for the most important garment you will ever purchase.

Begin by thumbing through the pages of the fashion magazines, skipping over those flights of fancy that just make you giggle, and bring in some photographs of gowns that appeal to you. Then, enjoy as the staff brings you a selection of gowns that fit your taste.

Regardless of the gown you choose, shop early. Like love, beauty takes time to create, and your gown is no exception. Boutiques we’ve consulted with estimate a four-month lead time to order most bridal gowns.
