Tradition with a Twist
Meredith Sherman & Fabian Saucedo
August 27, 2011
"The feel of our wedding was completely molded by the Sedona environment," says bride Meredith Sherman of her summer wedding to Fabian Saucedo.
The pair met and fell in love more than ten years ago when they were both assigned to Phoenix in the Teach for America program. "We spent many hours on the trails in Sedona and sitting by the fountains at Tlaquepaque," she recalls. Although they eventually left Arizona for a home in New York, their time in Arizona held a special place in their hearts.
The couple, whose lives have been centered on music, community activism, and advocacy,
welcomed an intimate group to celebrate with them in the place where their love first bloomed.
"From the moment guests stepped off the trolley for our ceremony, they were awed by Sedona’s beauty," remembers the bride. "The mountains, the red earth, the blue skies—this was our backdrop."
Wedding guests were welcomed to Los Abrigatos Resort & Spa for the celebration weekend. The ceremony, at the Sedona Heritage Museum, was a beautiful blend of Jewish and Mexican traditions. Dressed in white, Meredith and Fabian exchanged vows beneath a rustic white-draped chuppah accented with sunflowers.
From there, it was on to a celebration of culture, music, and great food in the courtyard at Tlaquepaque. A fiesta was prepared that included delicacies that represented both Fabian’s Texas roots as well as Meredith’s New York upbringing.
Carnitas, crab cakes, red chile cheese enchiladas, and shrimp salad were among the menu items. Of course, every great feast is capped off with a sweet treat. "For dessert," says Meredith, "we offered chocolate-covered strawberries in addition to cupcakes in red velvet, chocolate and vanilla. The cake was topped with hand-made sugar sunflowers and a sugar butterfly that fluttered above them!"
As the sun went down in Sedona, the lights twinkled above the Calle Independencia and the groom presented his bride with a surprise gift of song: a hip-hop rendition of Frank Sinatra’s "Fly Me to the Moon."
