You’ve got the Look!
Behind the Scenes at the Phoenix Bride & Groom Cover Shoot

Every bride carries a checklist of details to complete her wedding day dreams. Creating that sensational wedding day look is a combination of the perfect gown, shoes, jewelry, makeup and hairstyle. Often, however, the overall picture doesn’t come together until your wedding day.

This thought came to us during our shoot for this issue’s cover. We spoke with the professionals who worked with us to find out how they did it, and along the way we learned a bit about how a bride’s wedding look can come together.

Introducing your vendors to eachother in advance, can go a long way in perfecting your own wedding-day look.

Photography
Sergio, Photographer:
“Working on a commercial photo cover shoot can be a lot like working a wedding. The clients are different; but the success of both depends very much on having a team made of professionals that are dedicated to their craft. This cover shoot was just like that; just pure excellence in execution by a every member of the team.

As soon as I met Katie [the model], I could see that she could bring it, she had it! A portrait shoot is a collaboration of subject and photographer; and we worked wonderfully. She gave me exactly what I was looking for and more.”

The Gown
Lisa Daversa, Destiny’s Bride:
“I originally saw the gown when it was introduced at Carolina Herrera’s runway show in New York at Bridal Market in April. Carolina created a collection based on artists she admired such as Monet, Botticelli, Van Gogh, ect. Her show was located in Tiffany’s New York. Around all that sparkle and art I was truly impressed. In October, the dress came into the store. It is a gown that was interpreted from a Manet painting! I loved the Victorian elements and the exciting bursts of color. When dealing in a world of white, when you see something so vibrant, you can’t help but be overwhelmed.

I feel the gown really gives the bride an opportunity to express her personality! That is what every girl should do when picking out her very special gown. The one time they will ever get the chance to wear a true piece of art.”

Makeup
Linda Wagner, assisted by Alex Feldman:
“Your wedding day is like a photo shoot in a lot of ways; but at the end of the pictures; you get to walk down the aisle.

In approaching the look for the cover, I used the “mood” of the gown to create her look. I wanted to get her eyes to pierce right through you. So to enhance the drama, I used Bobbi Brown gel liner in Caviar Ink. By working the liner in between the lash line on the top, it makes the eyes “pop” Not to mention, it is the perfect base for a “smokey” eye look. And of course, Lashes!! Lots of them. I love to use false eyelashes any chance I can get.

When bringing out the beauty of her skin, Giorgio Armani’s Light Master Primer and Foundation were the only choice. It creates such a beautiful glow to the skin. Pop of color for the cheek to balance and warm up the skin with bronzer. Her lips are flushed naturally, so I like to take the natural base of the lips and pump it up a bit. Armani’s new lip wax feels comfortable on the lips and does not cake. Top it with gloss. It is an amazing process to have all of that creativity in one room. Ideas flow. A cover is born.”

The Bouquet
Tamara Noak, Petal Pusher:
“After viewing a photo of the Carolina Herrera dress, it was the black floral detail and the bustled blue bow in the back that drew out my inspiration. I envisioned a rounded, lush, romantic bouquet with delicate blooms that would compliment the striking details of the dress. I felt the bouquet would be best in subtle spring colors in cream, pale yellow and baby blue creating an elegant, soft accessory against the black floral detail. I chose to wrap the bouquet in an off-white satin accented with a ballet wrap of pale blue velvet to tie in with the fabulous blue bow.”

Hair Styling
Amy Mohr-Slater, Hair Design by Amy,
Pure Elements Salon:

“I was inspired by that beautiful dress to first [create] the classic elegance of the partial up style with a graceful cascade of loose curls over the shoulder. It needed to be edgier to give the cover a more avante garde look . . . so the hair came down and I gave it a ton of volume and air for a ‘sophisticated mess.’ It was exciting to see how a change of a hair style can create a completely different look.”
